The Darren Weir trained cult hero will be looking to secure successive Memsie Stakes victories and will join Sunline as successive winners of the seven furlong event. After successive unplaced runs for the first time since joining the Darren Weir stable, BHB resumed in the Lawrence Stakes here at Caulfield over the 1400m when running a three length 3rd to Hartnell. That was the first time he had missed victory over the track and trip, with 4 previous wins over the Caulfield 1400m, 3 of those at G1 level in the CF Orr, Futurity and the Memsie. After opening at $7.50 following the barrier draw, he has been well tried to firm in early markets and victory would provide Brad Rawiller with his 3rd success in the race. In Bart we trust!
Vega Magic has developed a superb record and is now undefeated in two starts since joining the Hayes/Dabernig stable. Gicen his chance in the G1 Winterbottom in the Perth carnival at the end of 2016, he ran a strong race to be within 1.5 lengths of the winner Takedown. At his next start he secured victory in the G3 Scahill Stakes and was then sent for a break and transferred from the Perth stables of Sean Casey to the Hayes barn. The Lindsay Park operation produced the gelding first-up in the G1 Goodwood at Morphettville where he settled on the pace and proved too slick for his opponents. Sent for another break he resumed over six furlongs here at Caulfield in winning the Listed Regal Roller. His only try at 1400m was victory in the Scahill and despite this the biggest test of his career, he is on the up.
Le Romain will be second-up for his Spring prep after resuming in the G2 Missile Stakes at Randwick when beaten 1.3 lengths behind Invincible Gem. The 5YO has a strong record when 2 runs into his campaign with two wins and two seconds from four attempts. Although yet to win at 1400m, the gelding has finished 2nd on all 4 attempts. During the Autumn he resumed at 1200m and then went to he 1300m of the G1 Canterbury Stakes second-up. Racing close to the pace he was too strong in the slop, with the track a heavy 10. His next start he was humbled in finishing 2nd to the mighty Winx, albeit 8 lengths behind the great mare. This will be his first look at Caulfield and just the 2nd time he has raced the Melbourne way, the 1st when taking the G1 Cantala Stakes.
The Shane Nichols trained mare had a superb 3YO term, winning four times at Group level, including the Myer Classic at Flemington at the elite level. After 3 runs in the Autumn that culminated in victory in the G2 Kewney Stakes over 1400m when running her closing 600m in sub 34 seconds, she was given a shot at the G1 Doncaster Handicap where carrying 52kg, she didn't look entirely comfortable on the heavy track. Opening at $17, there has been some specking to see her quote firm in 1 point. Given a let-up she then travelled to Adelaide for the G1 UBET Classic and after racing on the rails and being squeezed a couple of times, set out to chase Secret Agenda but could only get within two lengths. Resuming in the Aurie's Star, she was poised to strike but didn't quite have the speed when it ramped in the closing 150m. Out to 1400m should be ideal.
The first Group 1 of the Australian Racing Season will also herald the ‘unofficial’ start of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The Memsie Stakes is a 1400m event for 3 year old and older horses held under weight-for-age conditions at Caulfield.
Receiving Group 2 status in 1979, it was upgraded to Group 1 level in 2013. The 2017 edition will carry $1,000,000 in total prize money following a significant injection of funds by Racing Victoria. A genuine lead into the Spring Carnival, past winners of this race have gone on to win races like the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the same season.
The 2016 winner was the Darren Weir trained Black Heart Bart, ridden by Brad Rawiller while other past winners include Boban, So You Think, Miss Finland, El Segundo and Rubiton. Multiple winners include Sunline who was a dual winner, Ajax a three time winner and Lord who won the race over four successive years 1958-1961.
