The race is named after the former race mare Tristarc who was a five-time Group 1 winner and secured the Caulfield Cup in 1985. The race is restricted to 4YO and older mares and is held under the conditions of set weights plus penalties. The minimum weight before penalties are applied is 55kg in 2018.
First held in 1987 at Listed level, the race was granted Group 3 status in 1994 and in 2005 was elevated to the current Group 2 status. Initially held over 1200m in 1987 it was increased to the current distance of 1400m in 1988 and has always been held at Caulfield.
Total prize money on offer in 2018 will be $200,000. The 2017 winner was the Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott trained Global Glamour, ridden by Tim Clark. Some standout mares have won this race in the past, including First Seal (2016) Streama (2012) and Bonanova (1999).
