There are two races earlier on the program down the straight. It will pay to see what part of the track they race down in helping assess which barriers will be best served.
With a field of 12 there can often be a muddled tempo in the early stages as track position and field position is sorted.
Native Soldier draws the outside gate and likes to race on the pace, so he can dictate what track positon he races and may opt for the centre of the track.
Al Dorama raced on the pace at his 1000m Flemington success and will likely be in the leading group again.
Thorondor, Mig Energy and Ef Troop can all get forward to race on the speed. Encryption is a query from gate 1- he was ridden further back last start and didn’t run-on. They may be more positive this time.
Gear changes to consider- Encryption wears the blinkers for the first time, Marcel From Madrid has tongue tie first time, Ef Troop has winkers on first time and the cross over nose band off, Mig Energy has a bit lifter first time and the winkers off first time.
Of the 12 runners Encryption and Al Dorama are the only runners that have raced on the Flemington straight course with Al Dorama the only winner when claiming a 1000m 2YO event.
There are no fillies in the field and remarkably none of the field are first-up for this 1200m contest.
In the past 10 editions of this race the winner has been first-up twice, second-up on six occasions and twice the winner has been having their fourth run of their preparation.
Peter Snowden won this race 3 of the 4 times it was held between 2008 and 2011. Along with the Hayes/Dabernig team, they are the only trainers represented with a previous win in this race.
Native Soldier is the only last start winner in the race, 3 of the past 4 winners of this race had won their previous start prior to claiming the Danehill.
Vassilator is 2 from 2 at Flemington, however both those victories have come when running the bend over the 1400m trip, this will be his first run down the straight six.
Horsed to carry 58kg or greater to win this race this century are Planchet (59kg 2002), Fastnet Rock (59kg 2004), Jet Spur (60kg 2005), and Sepoy (58kg 2011).
Previous winners Sepoy and Fastnet Rock will both be represented by their sons. Sepoy has Marcel From Madrid and Native Soldier. Fastnet Rock is looking to win the Danehill in successive years after Catchy was successful in 2017 and is represented by Thorondor in 2018.
Ef Troop carried 60kg last start when resuming at Doomben. He drops to 56.5kg under the set weights and penalties scale and has since trialled impressively over Everest bound English.
After an impressive last start victory, Native Soldier opened at the top of the board at $3.20. Already meeting with support, the Sepoy colt has firmed to $2.90.
Ef Troop has also been supported, firming one point from the opening quote of $9.50 to $8.50.
5 of the 12 runners are under double figure odds. Native Soldier, Marcel From Madrid, Ocean Knight, Ef Troop and Tavisan are all under the $10 point.
Sanctimonious is the outsider of the field at $34 with Al Dorama at $31 and Mig Energy at $23.
The regally bred Encryption has been friendless in early trading at his $10 opening quote.
First held in 1982, the race has featured in various names changes in its short history since being first held as The Black Douglas. In 2006 the race became the Danehill Stakes to honour the champion sire that has had a breed-shaping influence on Australian thoroughbred racing. The super-sire was the leading sire for nine consecutive seasons in his prime.
The race is restricted to 3YOs of either sex and run under the conditions of set weights plus penalties. The race is held at Flemington over 1200m down the ‘straight six’ and has been run at Group 2 level since 2009. Originally it was a Listed event and then in 1985 was elevated to Group 3 status before reaching the current status.
Total prizemoney on offer in 2018 will be $200,000. The 2017 winner was the Hayes/Dabernig trained Catchy, ridden by Regan Bayliss. Previous winners of the race include Kinglike, Sepoy, Black Caviar, Fastnet Rock, Falvelon, Dantelah and Rory’s Jester.
