BMW Caulfield Cup Day is always a day to mark on the calendar. Held on the third Saturday in October during the Melbourne Spring Carnival, people come from far and wide to witness some of the most anticipated races on the Australian racing calendar. Every year, around 50,000 people attend Caulfield Cup Day. Second only to Melbourne Cup Day, Caulfield Cup Day is known for the extravagant outfits and often outrageous punting. It is host to one of the harshest and most challenging 2400m handicap races in the world, the Caulfield Cup. In 2014, Caulfield Cup Day includes six group races and four listed events, with prize money just shy of $5m, and $3m of that reserved for the Cup. On top of a handsome winner’s purse of $1.75m, the Caulfield Cup champ is granted automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup.
The Caulfield Cup was first run in 1878 and some quality horses have saluted on the final day of the three-day Caulfield Cup Carnival. ‘Cups King’ Bart Cummings has seven Caulfield Cups in his trophy cabinet, while jockey Scobie Breasley has his slice of history as well. He’s the only person to have ridden four consecutive Caulfield Cup winners (1942-45). Many staying greats have been successful in the Caulfield Cup, including Poseidon (1906-07), Rising Fast (1954-55), Tulloch (1957), Galilee (1966), Might And Power (1997), Northerly (2002), Elvstroem (2004) and Viewed (2009).
