The Sires' Produce Stakes is a classic race for two-year-olds under set weights conditions. Taking place during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, it is part of Australian Cup Day and is staged alongside some of the best Group 1 races on the Australian racing calendar, including the Group 1 Australian Cup and the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap. Held at the famous Flemington Racecourse, this Group 2 covers a distance of 1400m and offers $200,000 in prize money. Originally a Principal Race, it reached Group 3 status in 1979, before becoming a Group 2 race in 2005.
It has gone by many names over the years, from the Flemington Stakes (1866-1867) to the Ascot Vale Stakes (1873). The Sires Produces has been won by many classy horses over the years, including All To Hard (2012), Shamrocker (2010), Testa Rossa (1999), Vain (1969), Wenona Girl (1960) and Tulloch (1957). Quite often the youngsters who do well in this event progress to Sydney Autumn Carnival, as All Too Hard (2012) and Rostova (2009) did.
