The Kewney Stakes is a Group 2 race held at the famous Flemington Racecourse on Australian Cup Day. One of the premier Group 2 races of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, it features alongside other first-class Group races, including the Group 1 Australian Cup, the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and the Group 2 VRC Sire Produce Stakes.. It is a 1400m race for three-year-old fillies under set weights conditions, with $200,000 in prize money.
The event is named after Arthur V. Kewney, who was secretary of the Victorian Racing Club for 21 years, retiring at 74 years of age in 1946. Starting off as a Principal Race over 2000m in 1952, the Kewney was upgraded to a Group 2 in 1979. The distance was reduced to 1600m in 1985, before again being trimmed to its present distance of 1400m in 2010. Some of the more famous winners of this event include Faint Perfume (2010), Special Harmony (2004), Sunline (1999), Northwood Plume (1995), Mannerism (1991), More Rain (1983) and How Now (1976).
