The Easter Cup is a Group 3 Open Handicap horse race which takes place on the final day of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. As its name suggests, the event is held on Easter Saturday each year in late March/early April at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse. The race is run over the middle distance of 2000m with prize money of $150,000 at stake. The field assembled tends to be handy rather than a top class, with multiple big money Group 1 races, such as the Doncaster Handicap and Australian Derby, taking place in Sydney on the same day.
Occasionally a talented galloper will take part in the Easter Cup. Mark Kavanagh’s gelding Maldivian won the event in 2007, before taking out the $3 million Cox Plate in 2008. The race was inaugurated in 1909, and at one stage, it was known as the Sandown Cup (1949-1961). The Easter Cup is suited to horse which are progressing through the grades, or those which have performed well on the country cups’ circuit.
