As its name suggests, the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) is the most common lead up race to the $1.5 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, the premier feature race for two-year-olds in the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival. There are two versions of the race, both of which are run on CF Orr Stakes Day, held annually at Caulfield Racecourse in mid-February. This particular race is restricted to fillies and is run under set weight conditions. The event was upgraded to a Group 2 in 2015 and is 1100m, 100m shorter than the feature Blue Diamond Stakes.
As you would expect, winners of this race have gone on to complete the Blue Diamond Prelude (F)/Blue Diamond Stakes double. The 2017 winner of the prelude Catchy was able to secure the double for the Hayes/Dabernig team with Craig Williams riding. In 2014, the John O’Shea trained filly Earthquake blitzed the field in this race before going on to score an impressive win in the Blue Diamond Stakes less than two months later. Other classy winners of the BD Prelude (F) include; Guelph (2013), Samaready (2012), Alinghi (2004) and Merlene (1996) who then went on to secure the Golden Slipper.
