Featuring on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, one of the premier days during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, is the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes. The event is held annually in late February and is contested by three-year-old fillies under set weight conditions. The race is run over 1400m at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse, and acts as the perfect lead up to the Group 2 Kewney Stakes, held at Flemington on Australian Cup Day. Many fantastic fillies have won this event before going on to bigger and better things. Greg Eurell’s classy mare Pinker Pinker won the Angus Armanasco Stakes in 2011, before taking out the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate later in the spring.
The event is named in honour of Australian Racing Hall of Fame trainer Angus Armanasco, a man who reinvented the art of training two-year-olds for more than three decades. Other top shelf winners of this event, which started in 1976, include Miss Finland (2007), Special Harmony (2004), Champagne (1998) and Northwood Plume (1995). Originally a Principal Race, the Angus Armanasco (which has previously been known as the Tranquil Star Stakes, the Dalgety Stakes, Inglis Premier Sales Stakes and Jewel Stakes) was elevated to a Group 3 in 1980, before gaining Group 2 status in 2000.
