The Cleaner’s certainly living up to his mantle as the most popular horse in the country.
Bookmaker UBET reports customers are “climbing over themselves” to back the $1.85 favourite in today's Listed Conquering Stakes (1400m) in Launceston.
“There was a mini-stampede on him as soon as we put prices up,” said UBET Head of Product Gerard Daffy.
"“It doesn’t matter where The Cleaner runs or what his price is, punters always want in on the action.”
Stepping out for the first time since the Cox Plate, the Mick Burles-trained eight-year-old runs into a horse that had his measure last time he raced in Tasmania – Barry Campbell’s Admiral ($2.20), which won the Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) in February.
“Our price assessors don’t see a terrible lot between them, but the sheer weight of public support will no doubt see The Cleaner start a clear favourite,” said Daffy.
“You won’t be able to get $1.85 about him come race time.”
