Some of Australia’s biggest racing and media personalities will join UBET’s station RadioTAB on August 1 to support the inaugural RadioTAB Appeal for the National Jockeys Trust (NJT).
Legendary sports reporter Pat Welsh, Melbourne Cup winning jockeys Damien Oliver and John Letts and league legend Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin will join RadioTAB’s regular hosts to raise money and awareness for the NJT, which provides support to jockeys and their families in times of need.
Tuesday’s program will also feature jockeys who have benefited from the Trust, including Ben Saunders and Wade Clasohm who suffered spinal injuries following a track work fall in Toowoomba this year, and South Australian jockey Cheree Gask who was injured in a fall in 2003 and has since become a big supporter of the NJT.
UBET COO Brendan Parnell encouraged everyone involved with the racing industry from punters to participants and administrators to get behind the appeal.
“As a business which derives most of our income from the racing industry, we are proud to support the jockeys, who play perhaps the most important role in putting the product on every week,” he said.
“Unfortunately there are risks associated with riding - whether that be race riding or in track work as we saw in Toowoomba earlier this year – and the work of the Trust is a huge help during these difficult times.
“This is a truly great cause and in addition to our own donation, which we will announce on Tuesday, we will also be donating the commission taken on all trifectas placed on the Queensland meeting at Mackay on the day.”
“During the past 6 years, UBET has contributed more than $300 million to the South Australian racing industry through product fees, wagering taxes and sponsorships.
“The racing industry not only supports thousands of jobs around the State, but the clubs themselves are the lifeblood of many communities and we are proud to support them.”
Paul Innes, Chairman of the National Jockeys Trust said:
"The National Jockeys Trust is absolutely delighted to have this level of support from UBET and RadioTAB. The concept of UBET donating their commission on thoroughbred trifectas in QLD today is a fantastic initiative, to complement the inaugural Radio Appeal.
“This type of backing from the industry wagering and media partners is integral to the longevity and sustainability of the NJT, which provided $216,985 in support to 19 jockeys in QLD, TAS, NT and SA during 2015-2016 alone."
RadioTAB GM David Salmon said the station interacted with jockeys every day through its programming and with such a racing-mad listener base, it was the perfect channel to raise awareness and vital funds for the NJT.
“Like all of us at the station, our listeners love racing and what better day to support the Jockey’s Trust than the horses’ birthday,” Mr Salmon said.
UBET will also be supporting Jockey Celebration Day incorporating the National Jockeys Trust luncheon at Doomben on Saturday.
