New Zealand sensation Hasslehoof has been heavily backed to extend his perfect record this weekend when he steps out in Australia for the first time.
Bookmaker UBET reports a “mini-stampede” on the unbeaten four-year-old as soon as the market for the 1600-metre Gardenia Handicap went live.
The Donna Logan-runner, who has his own Twitter account and Facebook page, opened at $3.00, but was quickly pummelled into $2.70 under a pile of big bets.
“More than $10,000 was wagered on him overnight,” said UBET Media Manager Nick Curry.
“And with all the hype around him – including his celebrity namesake, US television star David Hasselhoff, enquiring about taking a share in him – we may well hold 10 times that by Saturday.
“He’s a cult hero across the ditch and always runs around well supported, but his form is in New Zealand and I’ll be interested to see whether it translates over here.”
