Trained by Tim Butt, My Field marshal is the fastest pacer in Australia, a time set in February this year when running an electrifying 1.46.9 to win the Miracle Mile. However, the 6YO stallion is not just a speed machine. His record at the longer distance is just as impressive and can boast a win in the 2700m G1 Messenger at Auckland among his achievements. The last time he started over this distance he was brave in defeat when 2nd to Lennytheshark in the Yarra Valley Pacing Cup, where the track record was obliterated by 4.7 seconds. Absolutely luckless last start he was 3 wide the entire trip in the Sunshine Sprint, with the opening 800m where he was driven hard trying to secure running line position. 2nd to Hectorjayjay in the 2017 Blacks A Fake, he will be looking to go one better in 2018.
The horse affectionately known as Mouse was impressive in winning the Sunshine Sprint after burning off the arm to find the front before releasing and taking a trail. His tactical speed can be a huge advantage in a race where tactics over the 2680m will be all important. In the Sunshine Sprint he was third-up from a spell when starting from barrier 7 and from gate 6 can look to utilise similar tactics to last week in finding the front before taking cover to sit in the snipers position. Trainer/driver Amanda Turnbull might know the chink in the armour if there is one, of one of her main dangers and race favourite. Amanda has driven Atomic Red in 10 of his 12 victories. The 6YO is a two-time G1 winner with victories in the Bonanza and the Bohemia. Can he make it 3B treble with the Blacks A Fake?
The Steve Turnbull trained pacer was brave in defeat in the G1 NSW Breeders Challenge when 3 & 4 wide off the track in one of the fastest opening 800m ever seen at Menangle. He was brave in defeat when 5th to Let It Ride. In the Sunshine Sprint last week he had no luck whatsoever and after being wide off the track for a long way and then probing for gaps that never opened when only beaten 5.5m. With no luck in recent barrier draws he has drawn closer than gate 5 once in his past 11 starts. On that occasion from gate 3 he smashed the Dubbo 2525m track record. The powerful front-running stallion set a 2400m world record for colts and geldings as a 3YO when winning a NSW Derby heat and should be ideally suited to the longer distance of the Blacks A Fake.
One of two runners for Tim Butt in the race, the call for a driver has been answered by one of New Zealand’s greatest drivers, Dexter Dunn. The season for Let It Ride has been hugely successful with the 4YO gelding landing 10 wins and 5 placings in 19 outings. The highlight of the season came two starts back when finishing powerfully over the top of runners to claim the NSW Breeders Challenge 4YO final in a sizzling 1.49.4 run. Taken back to NZ for a shot at the 4YO Messenger at Alexandra Park in Auckland when finishing down the line, his form since returning has been faultless, recording victories in all 5 starts. Runner-up to Jilliby Kung Fu in the Chariots of Fire earlier in the season, this will be his test with his only win at 2600m or greater coming at his first ever race start.
