As the name suggests, the Super Stayers is held over the staying trip of 725m. It is 1 of 7 Group 1 races held at a distance of greater than 700m on the Australian Greyhound Racing calendar.
Attaining Group 1 status in 2003, the race is run as part of the Australian Cup carnival at The Meadows.
In 2016 the race will carry total stakes of $145,000 with the winner to receive $100,000 and the final field was decided with those that finished 1st and 2nd in the 4 heats held on Saturday February 27 progressing to the final.

Opening a marginal favourite, Star Recall was the fastest qualifier for the final with a 42.317 gallop, a time that would have won any of the past 13 Super Stayers Finals. The heat run was her 1st run beyond 650m and the veteran bitch now has the record of 69: 39-8-4. A noted front-runner she is already a G1 winner of the 2014 Sale Cup and is in a purple patch of form, winning her last 5 starts in succession. Starting from box 5 in the Final, she has worn the yellow rug 9 times in her career for 5 wins and has 3 wins from 5 attempts at The Meadows.
Just behind Star Recall in the market is the Anthony Azzopardi trained No Donuts. He will chase his 2nd G1 race over 725m at The Meadows in the space of a fortnight after taking out the Zoom Top at his start prior to the Super Stayers Heat win. A fast beginner he starts the final in Box 2 and is also a Sale Cup winner and in January recorded victory in the G2 Summer Distance Plate Final. He has now raced on The Meadows twice for 2 victories both over the 725m trip, has 3 wins and 2 2nds from 5 attempts when starting in box 2 and at his 8 runs at greater than 600m has won 7.
3rd fastest of the 4 heats, Esparza was beaten for early speed but continued to rail to get into 3rd with a lap remaining. In a good staying effort she continued to chase and hit the lead turning into the home stretch running away for a 3.57 length win. Prior to her heat win she had met Star Recall in 3 successive races, running 3rd twice and 4th once. Owned by star trotting driver Greg Sugars, she finished 3rd in the G3 Topcat Video Final and from 4 attempts over the 725m at The Meadows has a win and 2 minors. She may need some luck owing to her racing pattern, but can finish the race strongly.
Beks will be storming home late and if the leaders strike trouble he will be ready to capitalise as he make his trademark barnstorming finish. Finishing 2nd in the heat behind No Donuts, he was at the tail of the field with a lap to go and continued to work home strongly after threading a passage through the field. This will be his 5th Group Final and his 2nd Super Stayers Final after making it through and finishing 5th in the 2015 edition.
