Held at Albion Park, the Group 2 Queensland Derby is held over 520m and in 2016 there were 3 heats from which the final field was determined. The first 2 from each were automatic qualifiers, while the two fastest individual 3rds also progressed to the Final Field. The third fastest 3rd placegetter and the fastest 4th are the reserve dogs.
Upgraded to Group 2 status in 2000, the 2016 Final will carry total stakes of $70,000 with the winner to receive $47,250. Past winners of the race include Dyna Villa, Flash Reality, High Earner, Black Enforcer and Fiery Asset.

Starting from box 6 in his heat My Silver Chisel moved across and raced in 3rd position once the positions were sorted and then nearing the 150m mark pushed forward into 2nd. Forging clear in the run to the judge he had a 2.75 length margin on the line in a strong run, breaking the 30 second barrier in just his first look at the track. Trained in Victoria by David Burnett, the black dog has now recorded 9 wins from 22 starts and will wear the red rug in the Final. From 3 starts off the inside box he has recorded a win and 2 placings and all 9 wins have come between the distance range of 515-525m. He was the equal fastest heat winner with both he and Thirty Talks stopping the clock at 29.97 for the 520m gallop.
Opening on the 2nd line of betting, Dundee Osprey only just scraped into the final, taking the final position available as the 2nd fastest third placing. Arriving with trainer Geoffrey Scott-Smith for the heat, the dog has been left with top Queensland trainer Tony Brett to prepare for the Derby Final. Starting from box 7 in his heat he was never on the track, racing wide all the way, continuing strongly despite the wide run he hit the line in an eye-catching performance. The 7 time winner came through the recent G2 Launching Pad Series at Sandown Park, placing 3rd in his heat, winning his semi-final and then finishing down the track in the final won by Buck Forty. This will be both his 2nd time starting from box 8 and 2nd look at the Albion Park circuit.
A greyhound on the rise, Thirty Talks has faced the starter on just 8 occasions, recording 6 wins from those starts. He opened his career through the rich Vince Curry Maiden Series at Ipswich, landing good wins in both his heat and semi-final. Landing the red rug for the Final, he was slow out of the boxes and that ended his chances, officially finishing in 6th position. He was then taken to Victoria for a shot at the Launching Pad Series, winning his heat out of box 8 and then finishing 4th in a semi-final off box 3. He was equal quickest of the heat winners and lines up with the green rug for the first time in his short career.
Another member of the powerful Tony Brett kennel, Zabdon Ferrari finished 2nd in his heat behind My Silver Chisel after starting from box 3. Jumping out into 2nd position early, he then ran the quickest time across the 2nd section of the race to take the lead. He was overpowered late by My Silver Chisel, but still managed to hold down 2nd. From 9 career starts, he is yet to miss a placing, having recorded 3 wins, 5 seconds and 1 third. Zabdon Ferrari also competed through the Vince Curry series, finishing 2nd in both his heat and semi-final before finishing 3rd behind the dead-heat winners Split Image and Paua To Avoid. He wears the yellow rug for just the first time and is on the 7th line of betting following the box draw.
