The River City Rumble takes centre stage at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, as Jeff Horn gears up to fight Anthony Mundine in a 12-round showdown in Brisbane.
Horn lost his WBO welterweight title when he was out-thought and out-fought by Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford in Nevada in June, and the former Brisbane school teacher will be looking to bounce back against the veteran Mundine.
Horn stunned the world by beating Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao in front of more than 50,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium in July 2017, before defending his title against British brawler Gary Corcoran five months later. Horn’s professional fight record now stands at 18 wins from 20 fights – 12 by knockout – with one draw and that solitary defeat to Crawford. He’s come under scrutiny for choosing to fight Mundine – with some critics labelling it a cop out – but defeat here could prove disastrous for Horn’s professional fight career in what is Australian boxing’s biggest bout of the year.
Anthony Mundine heads into his 57th professional fight claiming it will be his last – although he’s said that before – and the 43-year-old goes into this bout as a rank outsider. He knocked out Tommy Browne with a monstrous left hook in the second round of their bout in Sydney in January to set up this clash with Horn. His last major fight was against Danny Green at the Adelaide Oval in February 2017, when Mundine lost a majority points decision in a fight marred by controversy.
The trash-talking former rugby league star has effectively been in semi-retirement since then, but the chance to fight Horn – and potentially derail his career – has coaxed Mundine out for one final pay day. The Sydney-born Mundine is unlikely to receive much support from a parochial Brisbane crowd, although he once spent a season with the Brisbane Broncos when they were playing out of QEII Stadium in Nathan.
This fight will be contested at a catchweight of 71 kilograms, with the vacant WBO Oceania middleweight and Mundine’s WBO Oriental middleweight belts on the line.
