Beginning his career as a Spring 3YO, Man From Uncle faced the starter on three occasions, finishing in the money on each occasion. After winning on debut at Kembla Grange, his second start produced a 2nd behind Invcibella over 1400m in a benchmark 72 at Randwick. Taken to Flemington to have a look at some stronger types he rose to the challenge when finishing 3rd to Souchez in the Listed Hilton Stakes. Sent for a spell, the Anthony Cummings trained gelding was set for a return in the G3 Eskimo Prince following a trial over 1000m at Randwick. Specked at odds in his racetrack return, he settled mid-field and hit the line in good style to land victory with 56kg. Jason Collet rode him to victory at his return and keeps the ride for this. Opening Price $6.50
Chris Waller will be looking to secure successive Hobartville Stakes following the win of Press Statement in the 2016 renewal. Comin’ Through will be second up this campaign following his return in the Eskimo Prince. Settling at the rear of the field he hit the line in good style over the 1200m trip to finish within 1.5 lengths of Man From Uncle. In a three starts Spring prep he won at his debut appearance over 1400m at Warwick Farm before finishing 2nd, again over the 1400m. Taken South to season him in a better race, he finished strongly over the Flemington mile to secure victory in the G3 Carbine Club Stakes, defeating Morton’s Fork who took the Sandown Guineas at his next run. Michael Walker has ridden the colt at his past two starts and is up again here. Opening Price $4.40
The VRC Derby winner resumes for his Autumn campaign and comes into the race off a steady trial at Hawkesbury over 760m. He has bigger targets for the Autumn and the 1400m may be a touch too sharp for him, however at a $4.60 quote, he has met with some support. His Spring campaign was solid with his lone win coming at his ‘Grand Final’ when taking out the Derby. Leading in to the Classic, he only raced in Group company, with placings in the Gloaming Stakes and the G1 Spring Champion Stakes when beaten a half-length by Yankee Rose. Glyn Schofield has ridden the colt at two of his three victories and when riding the colt has the impressive record of 5:2-1-1. Opening Price $4.40
The Hobartville Stakes is a race for 3 year olds held under set weight conditions. Run over 1400m, the race has previously been conducted at Warwick Farm and Randwick, but has been held at the current track of Rosehill since 2006.
Holding Group 2 status, in past years it has been used as a lead in event to the better class 3YO races including the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas with many 3YO’s starting their Autumn campaign in this race.
Total prizemoney on offer in 2017 is $400,000 with the winner to receive $230,000. The 2016 winner was the Chris Waller trained Press Statement, ridden by Hugh Bowman. Other past winners include Pierro, Racing To Win, Lonhro, Fairway, Danewin, Shaftsebury Avenue and Marscay.
